Born on August 27th 1976 in Palma de Mallorca (Spain), Carlos Moya Llompart began playing tennis at age six. After turning Pro in 1995, he reached his first Grand Slam final in 1997 at the Australian Open. Moya qualified for the Masters Cup in fifth place on the back of consistent performances throughout the season. Three titles came the Spaniard's way in Chennai, Acapulco and the Rome Masters from five finals (runner-up in Sydney and Buenos Aires) with quarter and semi-final displays in seven other tournaments. After being #1 for the first time in 1999, he consistently played outstanding tennis and is still one of the best players in the world and has maintained a top 10 position. An injury sustained during Spain's Davis Cup semi-final victory over France in September saw him skip Madrid and Paris Masters events. Only a lack of match practice will prevent Moya from adding to his 56-17 season win-loss record in Houston. He has said he likes a court where the balls bounce well, affording him the chance put a lot of spin on the ball. Moya?s most potent weapon is an amazing forehand and he is a gritty fighter, as demonstrated by his record in 2000 at break points saved, coming 5th overall.
