Keisha Castle-Hughes was born in Donnybrook, Western Australia. Her mother, Desrae Hughes, is New Zealand Maori and her father, Tim Castle, Australian. At age of four, Keisha's family moved from Australia to New Zealand. Keisha has two younger brothers, Rhys (age 11 as of Feb 1, 2004) and Liam (age 7 as of Feb 1, 2004). The young star of Whale Rider was only 11 when she was chosen from the dozens of girls who had audtioned for the film. The filmmakers had held a search for the perfect "Pai" at her New Zealand school. Keisha was surprised at being picked for the role and that her secret dream was coming true. She was disappointed that her first role was not as glamorous as she had hoped. She made the best of the situation and was nominated for a 2004 Academy Award for Best Actress. The teen became the first child star nominated for the leading lady award. Attending the awards ceremony allowed her to live out her dream of wearing a beautiful evening gown. Castle-Hughes's roles for 2005 include the Queen of Naboo in Star Wars: Episode III. Keisha's interests include, Kapa Ilaga (the study of Maori cultural song and dance), rugby, netball, reading. Her favorite classes include math, English, and Maurias.
