 Critic Reviews

Grade : D
Boston Globe - ''Alfie'' manages to be a ditsy portrait of a happy-go-lucky bachelor. The movie has only flattering things to say and is driven by images of Law looking never less than scrumptious. He's not the only fabulous one. The closing credits come with still black-and-white photographs of the cast and crew having an annoyingly good time.   more

Grade : B
Chicago Sun-Times - But we don't go to see ''Alfie'' in order to make a sociological comparison of the two films; indeed, most of the audience members on opening night may not even know it's a remake. On its own terms, it's funny at times and finally sad and sweet. Alfie learns that to lie to women is to lie to himself about them. Law's best scenes are when he doggedly tries to keep smiling as his lifestyle grows grim and depressing. He's sold himself on life as a ladies' man, and is beginning to realize he is his only customer.   more

Grade : A -
Chicago Tribune - What a rotten idea: a remake of an iconic 1960s classic, one steeped in the nascent ethos of sexual revolution and once a unique showcase for brash newcomer Michael Caine, who owned the movie and with it launched one of filmdom's more durable careers.   more
