 Synopsis
Washington, D.C. homicide detective Alex Cross is through playing mind games with criminals--that is until a methodical predator, Gary Soneji kidnaps the young daughter of a United States senator from an elite school and lures Cross into the case. Soneji's not out for ransom, he wants something much bigger--a place in the history books. His every move is planned with the precision of a spider spinning his web, and Cross and secret service agent Jezzie Flannigan are in a race against time to stop him.
 Critic Reviews
The storyline starts off cliché-laden and becomes increasingly convoluted as it spirals toward failure. A predictable opening sequence establishes Detective Alex Cross ( Morgan Freeman ) as an emotionally-troubled cop. We watch as a case goes spectacularly wrong and both the suspect and Cross’ partner go tumbling off the side of a dam – conveyed through fake-looking computer graphics that provide further evidence that CGI might just not be the best thing that’s ever happened to movies. Once the guilt-ridden Cross has retreated to building model boats, the main storyline – involving the kidnapping of a child by a lunatic who wants to be respected by Cross – starts to move forward. Once the kidnapping has taken place and Cross is paired up with secret service agent Jezzie Flannigan ( Monica Potter ) – yes, there’s an unlikely cop duo here, marking the nine millionth movie to try this tired plot element, the proceedings slow to a crawl until action scenes begin anew, alternating with far-fetched plot twists. Gaps in logic are just one of the film’s weaknesses. Another is poor character development and scripting. Jezzie is the worst developed of all the characters. She says inappropriate things (what self-respecting secret service agent would constantly moan about her own failings – especially in front of virtual strangers?) and simply isn’t a convincing character. It’s not Potter’s fault, but little of what happens to Jezzie is particularly interesting – even though she’s entangled in the biggest plot twist of all. f you’re as big a fan of mystery/thrillers – and of Morgan Freeman – as I am, then you’ll probably stick with Along Came a Spider for about half of its 95 minutes, forgiving the gaps in logic and hoping it will somehow all come together. But only the most forgiving – or dense – of viewers will enjoy it beyond that point. It was my leg that fell asleep as I watched, but I wouldn’t have minded too much if it had been all of me.
