 Synopsis
Joe Dirt is a janitor with a mullet hairdo, acid-washed jeans and a dream to find the parents he lost at the Grand Canyon when he was a belligerent, trailer park-raised eight-year-old. Now, blasting Van Halen in his jacked-up economy car, the irrepressibly optimistic Joe hits the road in search of his folks. As his wandering, misguided search takes him from one hilarious misadventure to another, Joe finds his way to Los Angeles, where a shock-jock brings Joe on his radio show to insult him. But as Joe's life story unfolds, jeers turn to cheers, and an entire captivated city tunes in to hear the adventures of Joe Dirt.
 Critic Reviews
David Spade stars as Joe, a man with very few prospects for success who nonetheless remains optimistic, buoyed by the music of Lynyrd Skynyrd. Having been abandoned by his parents at the age of eight, Joe is left to fend for himself with little more than his useless trailer park charm as a resource. Finding his way to Los Angles and pulling down lucrative janitorial dollars, Joe is discovered by shock-jock radio personality Zander Kelly ( Dennis Miller ). Zander exploits the naïve Joe for entertainment value as Joe relays his life story on the airwaves. As the sordid details are revealed, the public’s interest and empathy peaks and Joe becomes a cult hero. Joe then goes on to solve the mystery of his parents’ abandonment, finds love and the true meaning of friendship. It is reasonable to have high expectations for Joe Dirt . Spade got his start on I Saturday Night Live /I as a strong satirist. His Hollywood Minute segment was delivered with a dry wit and smug look – almost indifference – a perfect reflection of a jaded public. As co-writer of Joe Dirt, there was potential for it to be a vehicle for his satirical skill. Perhaps trailer park white trash is too easy a target. The writing never evolves beyond the basic “lowest common denominator” humour. With the proliferation of Farelly Brothers-style comedy, it is going to get to the point where film goers will bemoan the fact that no one can write a good poop joke anymore. The script was co-written by Fred Wolf, the culprit of many SNL sketches that start with a funny premise but die an awkward death. Slightly funny concepts such as the mullet hairdo, and Joe Dirt’s “silence of the lambs” run-in are beaten to death, leaving the film straining to keep its minimal comic momentum. The cast isn’t given much material to work with and adds very little. It’s ironic that Miller plays a call-in shock-jock as his performance is sadly “phoned in”. Christopher Walken brings tension to the film but – let’s face it – he could cause you anxiety if he was giving you a million dollars. And when Kid Rock out acts Spade, something’s up.
