 Critic Reviews
Note to Josie and the Pussycats filmmakers regarding satire – Please be aware that satire means to bring ridicule upon someone else. Not upon yourself. Note to Rachael Leigh Cook regarding selection of film projects – You’ve been fingered by many a movie-lover, not to mention critics and industry hacks, as a potential long-time star. You’re beautiful, expressive and highly likeable. Yet your choice of scripts has been God-awful and seems to be getting worse. The Eighteenth Angel , She’s All That and even Get Carter could be put down to working on weak movies because you were a newcomer and it was a good career choice. Unfortunately, you don’t have the same excuse with AntiTrust and Josie and the Pussycats . You can do better than this, but at your current rate, you may end up tussling with Denise Richards for the best direct-to-video action movie roles. Note to co-writers/co-directors Deborah Kaplan and Harry Elfont – After writing and/or directing Can’t Hardly Wait , The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas and now Josie and the Pussycats, how could your careers rocket any higher? Methinks the young people whose movie tastes you figure you’ve got pegged are the unconscious ones you met at a keg party. Note to product placement folks – If Josie and the Pussycats was really trying to make a point about commercialism in the so-called ‘arts,’ then we got the product placement joke about two-minutes into the movie. On the other hand, if this was simply a cynical way of cramming more product placement into a movie than has ever been achieved before, then it’s a big success reminiscent of classic commercial doublespeak (“Do your own thing. Drink Coke.”). Either way, the 6,000 or so logos and product/brand name mentions really aren’t necessary. Note to Tara Reid regarding kamikaze moviemaking – While it’s impressive to see your 1930s-style productivity (13 movie roles in four years), it might be time to start thinking about quality over quantity. Playing a ditz in Josie and the Pussycats might generate an easy paycheque, but it sure doesn’t help establish you as something more than the latest blonde flavour of the month. Note to movie fans contemplating taking in Josie and the Pussycats – This movie is roughly akin to a long, boring pop music video. The storyline is as slight as they come, the performances equally shallow, and its attempt at satirizing consumer culture accomplishes nothing other than exposing this movie as a cynical attempt to hook the same audience of 13-year-olds that the movie portrays as mindless. Note to teenaged moviegoers – If they keep shovelling crap like Josie and the Pussycats at you, stop going to the movies altogether, use the money to buy a video camera and make some movies for yourself. It’ll be infinitely more enjoyable, save you from wasting a load of brain cells, and your movies can’t be much worse than what Hollywood’s been making for you.
