 Critic Reviews
Moulin Rouge is a sumptuous, spectacular, laugh-inducing, tear-jerking oasis of unbridled spirit and emotion. Watching this movie is an inexplicably wonderful experience. Romantic tragedy has been played out time and time again throughout the history of cinema, but never quite like this. The story – although set in 1899 Paris – is inspired by the Greek myth of Orpheus, whose beautiful music won over everyone – including Hades – but whose excessive fear of losing beautiful Eurydice doomed him to loneliness. Christian ( Ewan McGregor ) is a young starving artist new to the Bohemian neighbourhood of Montmartre, where he has come to write and celebrate the ideals of truth, beauty, freedom and love. By chance, he becomes entangled with a group of eccentric artistes who are creating a show to pitch to the proprietors of the famous Moulin Rouge music hall/ night club/ bordello – impresario Harold Zindler ( Jim Broadbent ) and his star, Satine ( Nicole Kidman ). Christian proves to be a brilliant songwriter, coming up with The Sound of Music off-the-cuff, not to mention numerous other tunes audience members will associate with Madonna, Elton John, Marilyn Monroe, and The Police, and not with 1899 Paris. Christian is recruited to write the musical (called “Spectacular Spectacular”), and pitch it to Satine, who, by chance, has mistaken him for a wealthy Duke who may be willing to sponsor an overhaul of Moulin Rouge in exchange for her favours. By the time the confusion is sorted out, Satine and Christian are in love and the Duke of Worcester ( Richard Roxburgh ) is after the ivory-skinned beauty. Moulin Rouge is a manic musical-comedy-tragedy that’s reminiscent of an old-time musical comedy on speed, or perhaps a madcap cartoon for grownups. Characters race across the screen, popping in and out crazily; sound effects seem straight out of The Three Stooges; the gaudily ornate and otherworldly sets create a stylized atmosphere where nothing can be taken literally, although the film’s emotions eventually hit home with surprising power. Early in the film, it’s easy to sit back sceptically, viewing this as a goofy takeoff on old Hollywood romances. But before long, you find yourself taken in by it all – it’s overblown, ridiculous, and often reminiscent of music videos, but geez, if it doesn’t grab hold of you and sweep you into its giddy – and sometimes sentimental – celebration of Bohemian values. McGregor, Broadbent and especially Kidman deliver wonderful performances – who knew McGregor and Kidman could sing? But the largest share of credit must go to director Baz Luhrmann, whose fantastic vision of a surreal world of song, dance, love and freedom is brilliantly realized.
