 Critic Reviews
One Night at McCool’s is built around three men’s recollections of a woman, each presented in the form of a confession. They’re talking about Jewel ( Liv Tyler ), a manipulative young woman who uses her 1940s-style bombshell looks and charm to get her way with men. Randy ( Matt Dillon ) is a bartender who rescues Jewel from her abusive boyfriend and partner in crime; Dehling ( John Goodman ) is a cop who investigates the demise of said boyfriend and finds himself entranced and in need of rescuing Jewel; Carl ( Paul Reiser ) is an obnoxious lawyer and Randy’s cousin, who also becomes attracted to and in pursuit of Jewel. Each man recounts his obsession through separate flashbacks that eventually come together as a single present-day narrative. Jewel grabs the attention of every man who sees her – we get long, lingering, slo-mo, soft focus, hairspray commercial-style shots to make this point – and bewitches each of them so they don’t notice her obvious manipulations until it’s too late. This is how Randy finds himself in dire straights and in contact with a middle-aged hired gun ( Michael Douglas delivers the only effective, restrained performance in the film). Meanwhile, Dehling discusses his obsession with a titillated priest ( Richard Jenkins is hilarious) and Carl shares his tale of woe with a disapproving psychiatrist (country music singer Reba McEntire isn’t new to acting, but sure looks in over her head here). Unfortunately, One Night at McCool’s is not a particularly successful debut for Douglas’ new production company, or for first-time director Harald Zwart, whose background as director of commercials and music videos is painfully obvious during this contrived, self-indulgent, over-done black comedy. The movie certainly has its moments, but a little restraint would have gone a long way toward making this a piercingly effective commentary on men who simultaneously worship and despise women. Instead, we’ve got a lot of flash and outlandish events tossed together in a haphazard fashion that’s just not as funny as the filmmakers obviously thought it would be. One Night at McCool’s is the sort of movie in which it’s obvious from early on that everything in the storyline is intended to build toward a madcap climax. Little of it makes sense, but that doesn’t matter, as long as we end up with an outrageous – and unfortunately, painfully contrived – finale. The script (by Stan Seidel, who died nearly a year before the film’s release) and Zwart’s direction are both heavy-handed, frequently losing potential laughs by signalling the gags long before they’re delivered.
