 Synopsis
A noir mystery set in the exotic world of Cuba in the late 1800s. Luis Antonio Vargas, a wealthy coffee merchant, arranges a marriage through the mail but discovers that the woman who arrives to share his house is an imposter with an eye on his fortune. When he arrives at the docks to meet Julia Russell, he is amazed to find that she is not the simple woman he was expecting. Though happier than he ever imagined, the surprises continue until the story takes a fateful turn. This is the story about the dangerous and sometimes lethal power of love.
 Critic Reviews
Writer-director Michael Cristofer, a marked man for the 1999 rape thriller "Body Shots," aimed for pulpy luridness, but left the suspense in his trailer. He still doesn't know what do with a camera and has even less of a clue of what to do with Jolie than he did in HBO's "Gia." As Julia, Jolie shows up in the film's antique Cuba setting ready to wed Banderas' Luis, a self-loathing widower who is marrying a stranger to keep pathos at bay. According to the photo he was sent, he thought he was getting a homely woman to cook his meals. A series of events -- Julia's disappearance, the arrival of a dubiously mustachioed detective (Thomas Jane) and hints that drop like anvils -- arouse Luis' suspicion, his fury and his astounding stupidity, but do nothing to diminish his horniness. You might try to relate to Banderas' situation -- you send away for a soccer mom, you get Lara Croft -- but contain your pity, please: Banderas still looks like Banderas. With this in mind, Cristofer is quick to get to the Antonio-Angelina sex. Terence Blanchard's percussive "Touch of Evil"-istic score throbs away, Banderas' trousers drop, Jolie's top comes off and the anti-eroticism is under way. It's awful without reaching newsworthy gruesomeness. Because, folks, there's nothing in "Original Sin" to gawk at.
