 Synopsis
In Las Vegas, a casino magnate stages the ultimate gambling contest for high rollers: six chosen candidates race to retrieve $2,000,000 from a hidden locker. What the racers don't know is that the tycoon and his rich buddies are betting on the outcome and are tracking every move the teams make. It's only a matter of time before they figure out who really stands to win the most before switching course to look for a different kind of pay-off.
 Critic Reviews
The cast — Kathy Najimy and Jon Lovitz as a married-with-children couple, Rowan Atkinson as a dim-witted Italian narcoleptic, Wayne Knight as a manic medical worker, Seth Green and Vince Vieluf as bumbling brothers, Breckin Meyer as a strait-laced control freak and Amy Smart as a helicopter pilot — plays second fiddle to the cockamamie stunts concocted by director Jerry Zucker (Airplane!) and writer Andy Breckman. Each is stingily dealt one or two goofy traits. (Vieluf, for instance, mumbles incoherently because of a grossly infected pierced tongue.) Race, which delights in bashing all manner of transportation, hits its silly stride early and never shifts into a higher gear. The best of the sight gags involves an old Bronco driven by Green that ends up dangling from an airport radar tower. It's also mildly amusing that Lovitz and his family think they are going to a museum dedicated to Ken's Barbie, but it turns out to be a tribute to Klaus Barbie. Nazi humor — always a killer. But the bovine abuse — a mooing cow dangles from a hot air balloon — is yesterday's Farrelly brothers' fodder. A misplaced heart destined for a transplant victim stupidly ping-pongs around a van. The I Love Lucy conventioneers costumed like their carrot-topped idol predictably "waaaah!" over each mishap after Gooding commandeers their bus. I felt their pain. The ending is most disappointing, a "We Are the World" feel-good cop-out that stomps out any hint of the selfish streak that drives the plot. Rat Race's greatest cultural contribution may be the coinage of the term "prairie-dogging." Whoever came up with that dunk into the toilet tank must be flushed with pride.
