 Critic Reviews
However you define the word, Scary Movie 2 has spunk. Like its predecessor, it's as exuberant as it is puerile, oozing a cheeky energy that will make you forgive many things — things like a Roman Catholic priest (James Woods) praising the Holy Ghost while defecating the dregs of a disagreeable enchilada out of his system. Things like a paraplegic-yet-limber scientist (Mr. Show star David Cross) giving himself oral sex. Things like Tori Spelling trying to act like her 15 minutes of fame haven't expired yet. Clearly, director Keenen Ivory Wayans meant for these sights to shock his audience. But can anything still be shocking in our post-Freddy Got Fingered, cesspool-fluid-soaked era? The answer is yes — sort of. Scary Movie 2 definitely pushes whatever shreds of the good-taste envelope that remain. For example, when confronted by a zombie with a model's slinky body and a ghoul's rotting face, hip-hop stoner Shorty Meeks (Marlon Wayans) does what any self-respecting pervert would do — he puts a bag over the creature's head and has sex with it. In another scene, randy college student Buddy (Malcolm in the Middle's Chris Masterson) is saved from hypothermia by his friend Cindy (Anna Faris), her hand, and a liberal application of lubricant — with a sticky result that could be measured in gallons. Much, much, much more fluid flies in Scary Movie 2, but the film doesn't really need the help. It works as an Airplane!-like spoof of classic horror movies and contemporary culture, briskly shooting off sight gags and one-liners like a possessed whoopee cushion stuck on rapid-fire, with a plot that's a mélange of all ghost stories great and crappy. After an Exorcist-aping introduction, a group of young co-eds (including the survivors of the first Scary Movie) are all asked by a dirty-minded professor (Tim Curry) to participate in a Haunting-esque experiment: Spend the night in a creepy mansion straight out of The House on Haunted Hill which is also host to a Poltergeist-like spirit and a high-tech lab directly lifted from Hollow Man. Hollow Man? What are references to a second-rate sci-fi dud doing in a send-up of the macabre? Scary Movie 2 references movies from almost every genre, ranging from tired kung-fu riffs on blockbuster Charlie's Angels to a killer-penis joke stolen from little-known blaxploitation pic Soul Vengeance. Such story-sampling may delight name-dropping movie geeks who write film reviews, but most viewers will be scratching their heads, wondering where the spoofery stops and idiocy begins — just before they're sprayed with another shower of steaming goo.
