Your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man returns in the sequel to the record-breaking blockbuster movie debut for Marvel Comics' flagship character. Tobey Maguire returns as Peter Parker, the nerd-turned-hero, to face new threats to New York City and the people he loves.

Grade : B
Boston Globe - The stern talking-tos, from the fed-up Mary Jane and stormy Harry (who has no idea his father was the Green Goblin and hates Spider-Man for killing him), don't help. If ever there were an actor built to handle the sniping, it's Maguire, whose boyishness has a real urgency here. Seeming forever 18 has never suited him better. There's a Hall of Fame encounter involving Spider-Man, a speeding train, and its passengers that seems more like a job for Superman -- but Maguire is up to the task. Beneath all the ennui and indecisiveness beats the heart of a young man of steel.   more

Grade : A
Chicago Sun-Times - ''Spider-Man 2'' is the best superhero movie since the modern genre was launched with ''Superman'' (1978). It succeeds by being true to the insight that allowed Marvel Comics to upturn decades of comic-book tradition: Readers could identify more completely with heroes like themselves than with remote godlike paragons. Peter Parker was an insecure high school student, in grade trouble, inarticulate in love, unready to assume the responsibilities that came with his unexpected superpowers. It wasn't that Spider-Man could swing from skyscrapers that won over his readers; it was that he fretted about personal problems in the thought balloons above his Spidey face mask.   more

Grade : A -
Chicago Tribune - ''Spider-Man 2'' gives comic -book movies, sequels and summer popcorn flicks a good name. Until it develops a bad case of verbosity toward the end, it improves upon its predecessor in almost every way, delivering flashier thrills while digging deeper into its characters and adding an overlay of wit.   more
