 Synopsis
Gregorio (Banderas) and Ingrid (Gugino) are the two greatest secret agents the world has ever known. After their retirement, having exchanged the adventure of espionage for parenthood, Gregorio and Ingrid Cortez are called back in to action. When their former colleagues, the world's most formidable spies, start disappearing one by one, the Cortez's are forced to take on techno-wizard Fegan Floop (Cumming) and his evil, egg-headed sidekick, Minion (Shalhoub). But when the unthinkable happens and they too disappear, there are only two people in the world who can rescue them... their kids.
 Critic Reviews
The movie opens cleverly, as young Mom Ingrid ( Carla Gugino, in a role Kelly Preston quit on) puts her children to bed. Daughter Carmen ( Alexa Vega ) asks her mother for ‘that bedtime story’, and the audience is then treated to the story of how Ingrid met her love, Gregorio ( Antonio Banderas ): Both were ultra-secret spies who were meant to assassinate one another, but instead fell madly in love. Of course, the bedtime story is entirely true, and it’s not long before Mom and Dad have their ‘retirement’ interrupted by an urgent mission. When things go awry for Mom and Dad, the kids take charge and set off to save the day. It seems that the evil Fegan Floop ( Alan Cumming ) and his sidekick, Minion ( Tony Shalhoub ), have kidnapped the former super-spies. There are several other wack-o characters to contend with, some friends and some not: the recently fried-to-a-crisp Ms. Gredenko ( Teri Hatcher ), the reliable Uncle Felix ( Cheech Marin ), the ominous Mr. Lisp ( Robert Patrick ) and the mysterious Machete ( Danny Trejo ). The special effects are flawless, which is always nice, but the action sequences in which they are showcased are truly exciting. Rodriguez has proved that you can make an exciting action movie in which no people are killed… although more than a few do get transformed into nasty, drooling clown-mutants. Banderas and the beautiful Gugino are great as the spy parents, but this movie isn’t really about them, and it’s nice to see a big star like Banderas play a supporting role to two children. Among the supporting cast, Alan Cumming stands out, playing Fegan Floop as sort of the dark side of Pee Wee Herman. Of course, no amount of colourful sets or neat-o effects can take the place of a movie’s heart, and that’s what Alexa Vega and Daryl Sabara are to Spy Kids . As the ever-bickering brother and sister spy team, these two are simply a joy to watch. Kids will have a ball watching this movie, as it’s packed full of cool stuff from wall-to-wall, whether it’s the built-in toilet in the spy jet, or the lava lamps strewn throughout Floop’s castle. For parents who enjoy taking their families to the movies, I would contend that your pickings are usually pretty slim. Every so often a family movie comes along that will appeal to the whole family, and Spy Kids is one of those. All ‘family movie stuff’ aside, Spy Kids is a more entertaining ‘spy’ movie than both Mission: Impossible films combined.
