 Synopsis
Internationally famous oceanographer Steve Zissou (Bill Murray) and his crew -- Team Zissou -- set sail on an expedition to hunt down the mysterious, elusive, possibly non-existant Jaguar Shark that killed Zissou's partner during the documentary filming of their latest adventure. They are joined on their voyage by a young airline co-pilot who may or may not be Zissou's son (Owen Wilson), a beautiful journalist (Cate Blanchett) assigned to write a profile of Zissou, and Zissou's estranged wife and co-producer, Eleanor (Anjelica Huston). They face overwhelming complications including pirates, kidnapping, and bankruptcy.
 Critic Reviews

Grade : A-
Hollywood Reporter : Steve Zissou (Murray) is a 52-year-old American version of Jacques Cousteau but without the joie de vivre. He moves with a weary stiffness, and when a child presents him with a brightly striped seahorse -- the first of the film's many fantastic creatures -- he glances impassively at it. Later, he flicks a Day-Glo yellow lizard off his wrist with cavalier spite.    more

Grade : B
filmcritic.com : In The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, one sees other actors besides Bill Murray – quite a lot of them, actually – but there are really no other performances to speak of. This is his movie, and everyone else, no matter how large a role they have, is really just a walk-on. Now, to your average filmgoer, this sounds like a fine thing, after all,   more

Grade : C
E! Online : The writer-director appears so enamored with his break-all-the-rules style of filmmaking that he completely wastes the great talents of stars Bill Murray and Cate Blanchett. Murray is a washed-up ocean-documentary maker (with quirky crew, natch) who meets the son he never knew (Owen Wilson) while hunting a dangerous sea creature.   more

Grade : C+
USA Today : Murray is the title's Zissou, an oceanographer whose last nine documentaries have glugged, which can dry up funding. And something called a jaguar shark has just devoured his longtime associate (Seymour Cassel), which gives him the brainstorm to make pursuit of the creature his next filmed project. If we're never going to see Murray play Captain Ahab — something I'd pay to see — this sounds like OK compensation.   more
